Ronda Rousey Dominates Cat Zingano
MMA: UFC 157-Rousey vs Carmouche

Ronda Rousey added to her impressive UFC resume this past Saturday night and didn’t even have to break a sweat. Rousey beat completely overmatched Cat Zingano in 14 seconds to defend her UFC Bantamweight title. It was vintage Rousey–a quick judo throw to her patented arm bar ‘finisher’. One she gets the arm bar set up there’s nothing that opponents can do besides tap out.

A 4th degree judo black belt, Rousey is undefeated in MMA competition at 11-0 but even that doesn’t fully underscore her dominance of opponents. Only one fight made it out of the first round (Meisha Tate, who eventually succumbed to the armbar). Eight of her victories have been in under a minute with another in 1:06. Four of her wins have been in under 30 seconds. Nine of her victories have been armbar submissions with the other two KO/TKO stoppages. The biggest challenge for Rousey at this stage of her career isn’t winning fights but instead finding credible opponents. With her past two wins taking a combined 30 seconds that’s clearly an issue.

In fact, the pitiful level of competition she faces is part of the reason for her dominant performance. She’s really good while most of her opponents are really bad. That might be an oversimplification, but no other female fighter in the sport has anywhere near the formal martial arts background that Rousey does. The fact that her skill is judo in a sport where most train to defend jiu jitsu style submissions doesn’t hurt either. She started training in judo at age 11 and has been in high level competition ever since. It’s instinctive to her at this point. She doesn’t have to think about what she’s doing while her opponents have to focus on it so much that they forget their own fight strategy.

That’s why Rousey is going to win for as long as she wants to fight, at least assuming that no other judo black belt comes out of the woodwork to challenge her. She’s a judoka of the highest level, she’s a tough fighter and there really isn’t a female fighter on the planet with the skill set to match up with her.
