Posted on March 7, 2012 by John Petit
UFC 146 is really starting to take shape, and there is absolutely no shortage of heavyweights. The UFC announced that the main event for the card will be a championship fight between Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem, and the co-main event for the card will be former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir. Velasquez is coming off his first professional loss to Junior dos Santos, to whom he lost his belt, but a win here will get him the fight to get back his belt. UFC President Dana White announced via twitter that the winner of the Velasquez Vs. Mir fight will be the next challenger for the heavyweight strap.
As if two heavyweight fights ont he main card weren’t enough, Roy Nelson will be back in the cage to take on Strikeforce transplant Antonio ‘Big Foot’ SIlva. Roy Nelson is coming off of a decision loss to another Strikeforce fighter Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143, and will be rolling out the welcome mat for Bigfoot. Bigfoot is coming off of his elimination fight to Daniel Cormier, and he will be making UFC debut. Prior to his loss to Cormier, Silva became the second fighter to TKO renowned heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko.
The under card will also feature a heavyweight bout. Former number 1 contender Gabriel Gonzaga is rolling out the welcome mat for the undefeated Shane del Rosario. Gonzaga was welcomed back to the UFC as a late repalcement at the past UFC event in Rio where he defeated Ednaldo Oliveira by submission in the first round. Del Rosario is coming off a win over Lavar Johnson in February of 2011. He was set to face Daniel Cormier in the heavyweight grand prix when he was rear ended by a drunk driver, and was side lined with a herniated disc in his back and was unable to train.
Here is the announced fight card for UFC 146 that will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 26, 2012.
