Nick Diaz Profile

Nick Diaz is currently one of the best 'pound for pound' fighters in the sport but throughout his career he's been a very enigmatic competitor. He's been derided as a 'thug', is outspoken about his enjoyment of marijuana and isn't a particularly media savvy or self promoting competitor in a sport full of pitchmen to rival NASCAR. On the other hand, he's one of the most technically adept and well rounded fighters in the sport. His Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills are off the charts (he's one of three Caesar Gracie BJJ black belts), has professional level boxing skills and incredible conditioning and cardio. He frequently competes in marathons and triathalons, claiming that when you can operate at this cardio level for several hours doing in a 25 minute fight is almost effortless. Then there's the upside of his tough upbringing in Compton, California—he's a 'real fighter', a tough as nails competitor who fights through pain and adversity. He's always been something of a 'cult hero' among his fan base but the wider audience of more casual fans is starting to appreciate what an exceptional fighter he is.

The early part of Diaz's career was inconsistent, but since an April 2006 loss to Sean Sherk he hasn't been beaten decisively. He had a spectacular submission victory over Takanori Gomi overturned to a 'no contest' due to a failed blood test and lost to one dimensional KJ Noons on a questionable stoppage due to a cut that Diaz wanted to fight through. During this stretch he's defeated top notch competitors including Paul Daley, Frank Shamrock, Marius Zaromskis, Scott Smith and Hayato 'Mach' Sakurai. In the cage, he's a diametric opposite from the measured and deliberate Georges St. Pierre—Diaz isn't afraid to go toe to toe with his opponents and walk right into their 'strength'. That has also earned him a reputation as one of the most exciting fighters in the world.

Diaz's younger brother, Nate Diaz, is also a professional MMA fighter. He trains with superstars Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez and continues to live in his hometown of Stockton, California.
