Jon Jones Profile

Jon 'Bones' Jones is the reigning UFC Light Heavyweight champion, having defeated Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua by TKO in March 2011. Due to his size, conditioning and skill—combined with the fact that he's only 24 years old—many MMA observers think that Jones will be a dominating champion and have a long title reign. He's certainly shown very little weakness to this point in his career—in fact, his only loss is due to the illegal use of elbows against Matt Hamill in a fight that he was in complete control of and on the verge of finishing. Since winning by decision in his first two UFC fights Jones has taken his next four fights (the aforementioned DQ loss to Hamill notwithstanding) by overwhelming stoppage victory.

Jones has a background in Greco-Roman wrestling but what makes him so dangerous is his unorthodox and well rounded style. Most Greco-Roman wrestlers seek to wear out and control their opponents (think Randy Couture) and Jones is more than capable of doing this. Unlike many Greco-Roman wrestlers, however, Jones is a powerful and unorthodox striker and has the ability to win by submission as well. He's got the size that would allow him to compete in the heavyweight class but that's combined with the athleticism and conditioning that allows him to easily cut down to the light heavyweight limit of 205. This also means that on fight night his opponents are invariably facing a much larger man physically, and an extremely skilled one at that.

Since his loss to Hamill, Jones hasn't really been tested by any of his UFC opponents. He's beaten Vladimir Matyushenko and Brandon Vera by first round stoppage, Ryan Bader by second round submission and defeated 'Shogun' Rua for the title by third round TKO. Jones' first UFC title defense has been delayed by a hand injury, but he's expected to face Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson at UFC 135 in September.
