Dan Henderson Profile
A native of Southern California, Dan Henderson began competing in wrestling in high school and went on to excel at the college level at Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State. He also represented the United States in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. He trained for much of this time under the legendary Alexander Karelin. He started training in MMA in 1997 and began training at Team Quest in Portland, Oregon in 1999. He has remained with Team Quest ever since and now runs and trains out of a California based affiliate of the original Portland gym.
Henderson began his career in RINGS and the UFC before moving on to what at the time was the world's top MMA promotion, the Japanese based PRIDE organization. Henderson would fight 18 times under the PRIDE banner and would be the organization's final middleweight champion at the time it was assimilated by UFC parents Zuffa, LLC. Henderson lost his first two fights back in the UFC though they came against the highest level of competition—Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson and Anderson Silva.
He continued to fight in the UFC until mid-2009 when he walked away from an insultingly low offer from the UFC and signed with the competing Strikeforce organization. He lost his first fight in the promotion, by decision to middleweight champion Jake Shields He won his next two fights when—ironically--Strikeforce was purchased by Zuffa. He's now signed to fight Fedor Emelianenko in late July.
In addition to the California Team Quest location, Henderson also owns the Clinch Gear clothing line. Henderson is 1/16 Native American—according to him based on his genealogical research he's a descendant of the Walla Walla Tribe in the Pacific Northwest. Henderson lives in Temecula, California with his wife Allison and three children.
